Italian Citizenship by Descent (Jure Sanguinis)

Italian Citizenship by Descent (Jure Sanguinis)

Italian citizenship by descent (“jure sanguinis”) changed significantly in 2025.

Under the new decree, Italy restricted citizenship by ancestry to applicants with at least a parent or grandparent born in Italy. In many situations, it may also be necessary to show that the relevant Italian ancestor actually lived in Italy for a certain period before the applicant’s birth.

Italian Citizenship by Residence

Italian Citizenship by Residence

In general, it is possible to apply for Italian citizenship after a period of legal and continuous residence in Italy (typically 10 years for non-EU nationals, with reduced timelines in specific cases, such as spouses of Italians or certain ancestry-related situations).

There are ongoing discussions and proposals to reduce timelines, but eligibility must always be assessed under the law in force at the time of analysis.
